All that really belongs to us is time; even he who has nothing else has that.

Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit.

Everything takes time and effort, whether cutting the grass or learning to surf. Without time and effort technique wouldn’t exist. Without technique there is no speciality. Without speciality we are boring. Speciality relies on the time and effort involved in process and thought.

Horizon furniture studio presents Time and Effort – an exhibition of interesting things.

Featuring the work of frieda meaney , kevin callaghan , rory tagney , hilary nunan , alex pentek ,

martin horgan , paul la roque , jo allen , fergal o leary and christine byrne.

Each artist has spent this time and effort learning, thinking, relearning, practising, honing, toiling

In an effort to invest themselves in their work.

Is it successful?

What reward does time and effort deserve?

Is the process of time and effort its own reward, like virtue?

Paul la roque, a graduate of the Crawford College, is a printmaker. His work deals with issues of contemporary idolatry. Comic book heroes are Christ like figures, asking questions about commercialism and religion with wit and intelligence

Rory Tagney, a graduate of letterfrack Furniture College, has been exploring sculpture through the use of wooden materials since leaving college. His piece “earth above ground “is a serious work of sculpture that’s both scary and beautiful and asks pertinent questions of man.

Alex pentek , Crawford graduate , sculptor , has been producing large scale public commissions of late , including “Beryl”, a limestone guard dog outside the revenue offices in cork . In this show he has a pink resin ant, one of a series of 12. Alex is currently in talks about a large commission in Ontario, Canada

Fergal o leary designs and makes modern bespoke furniture that asks to be appreciated and used. Tactile and subtle, simplicity is at the core of his work.
